“C’mon – it won’t be so bad!”
“No, Hugo – stop! This is bad! What if we get stuck, or something?”
“You’re such a stick in the mud, Rose. Nothing’s going to happen!”
“Oh yeah, because you know everything, hmm, Teddy?”
“Uh, yeah.”
“Hugo, hurry and do it already, will ya? Turn it back twenty-five years.”
“Shut up James! Rose is right! Stop, dad will be sooo mad.”
“Lily, put a sock in it. It’s not like he’ll know. When we want to come back, we’ll just set it to like a minute from now.”
“…What if this doesn’t work out right?”
“Well then we’ll make sure you get lost, Malfoy.”
“Leave Scorpius alone, James!”
“Oh yeah, sorry Albus, I forgot that he’s your ‘friend’ or something.”
“Okay, it’s set. Let’s go!”
“NO – wait –”
It was odd; they had heard of time-travel before, but they had never actually done it themselves. They all had their thoughts about it: Rose thought it must be something like a fold in time, while Hugo imagined something a la Charmed, where they fazed in and out. Lily had always thought about swirling colors that you got lost in and James never really thought it through. Scorpius wasn’t sure; he just knew this wasn’t the smartest idea ever thought up. Teddy wondered if they would see flashes of history as they went back through time. He was hoping that just maybe he’d be able to see his mother, considering she’d still be a little kid in 1978. None of them where right: it was more of a lights in, lights out with a mixture of flailing limbs and bruised elbows. Some grunted in pain as they got kicked in the shin while others cursed when they fell over backwards. It was…a mess. Furthermore, something went a little, ah, wrong. Oh, they showed up at Hogwarts alright and from what they knew, everything had gone perfectly. Outside the walls of the school, however, a story different from the one everyone has been told was unfolding.
People randomly disappeared. It could be an adult, a baby, a teenager – it didn’t matter. One day they were there and the next they weren’t. At first there was absolutely no connection; an old man was reported lost when he didn’t return from grocery shopping and there was a little girl who had run off down an alley and simply disappeared. A son lost sight of his mother when he bent over to pick up the book she dropped and a sister went to order some tea for her twin, only to find that she was gone when she returned with the steaming hot liquid. How could there be a connection? The disappearances were recorded in Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales – everywhere. The ages, genders, professions, height, weight, everything differed. That is, until one astute fellow dared to point out their blood. Muggleborn, every single one of ‘em. The twin, the old man – they all had Muggle parents or grandparents. Was that the connection? It had to be.
No one can – or is willing – to explain why these horrible things that are happening. The Ministry is divided between those who believe Voldemort is leading the disappearances and those who are afraid to admit the looming threat of genocide. There are spokespeople for both sides, some of whom may or may not be paid off by Voldemort to say what they are. The Order also works within the Ministry, gathering information and trying to speed along the process of searching for the abducted witches and wizards. Will there be progress in the future, or will the Wizarding World simply live with the mystery of the Disappeared? Something needs to be done to protect the community. Are you willing to put your best foot forward?
